It's a few suburbs over from the Heathcote Valley, but I bet we've all been there. Sumner beach is a great place for a sunny day out. The surf, seagulls and sand must have given a lot of fun to Heathcote people over many years. Trouble is, it's also a place that faces a lot of issues.
The Christchurch City Council know this, and they've done what they usually do for this type of thing, written a hefty report. The difference this time is that it comes with an absolutely fantastic graphic. It makes what's on the mind of Sumner, Clifton and Monck's Bay residents really clear for us. It's also beautiful too, so take a look!
Here it is, with all the problems listed. When I read through them, I was struck by how many seemed to have been in my mind for a while. What would happen if a tsunami actually struck, and what could we do to protect the area that wouldn't cost a lot and be too visually intrusive? Should the planting be redone in a more manicured style? What about those people who enjoy their fishing at the Shag Rock corner? They have always looked like they are sitting in a draught to me. Maybe they could have a wind shelter?
If any of these problems strike a chord for you, find out more by visiting the council's webpage on the issue. You can also attend a drop-in information session at the Sumner Community Centre on Sunday 31 August, between 11 am and 3 pm. If you feel like letting the council know what you think on any one of them, you can do that too. Maybe you'll be able to drive past one day and say "I thought of that!" Feedback must be received by 4.30 pm on Monday 8 September 2008.
