Leonbergers Ollie and River at Ferrymead. Credit: Angela and Jason Hunt[Visitors to Ferrymead Heritage Park may remember meeting two large Leonberger dogs and their owners, Angela and Jason Hunt. They would like to thank Clare Robinson and all those involved in the Pets Day Out at Ferrymead on 28 December last year. They have asked Ollie to write in and tell you all about his, and friend River's, day out...]

It didn't take us long to get ready. Our owners like to show us off and this means we are always getting a regular grooming. Leonbergers are not normally an overly active dog, so we didn't need a walk either. After a breakfast of Tux biscuits, it was straight into the car and off to Ferrymead.

I do remember it was a really hot day. We have a thick coat which made it worse. River thought we should have been allowed to play with the fire hose!

We love the water and our webbed feet are great for swimming. Sometimes we like to sleep with our heads in a water bowl and blow bubbles! One of the other Leos that was there jumped up into a water trough to cool off. Good idea, we thought.

There were a lot of pets to meet. My favourite was a kune kune pig who let me rub noses. She wasn’t fazed at all and I just loved her grunting. River saw a puppet rabbit and thought it could be a toy she might be allowed to play with. No luck for her though.

The smaller kids were a little shy of us because we are so big, but mums, dads and the older kids all loved patting us. “ Wow, look at the size of their feet”, “Oh they feel so soft”, “ I bet they take up all the bed” and “They must eat a lot” are just a few of the comments we got.

There were a couple of people who liked us so much they wanted to take us home to live! My advice for anybody wanting a pet like us is that you will need to be okay with being stopped in the street when taking us for a walk. You will be asked lots of questions!

If you didn't get a chance to meet us, we will be visiting Ferrymead again a little later in the year. We have a new puppy coming to live with us, so our owners will probably take us all along together and get some photos of us around the park. If you see us, come along and say hello. I'm the big fellow with the lion's mane!
