A fence tidy-up for St. Mary, courtesy Mobil. In our present times where the price of fuel seems to be spiralling out of control and the fuel companies are coming in for constant criticism, it is very unusual to hear them actually getting some ‘good press’. Not so for Mobil from the people of the Church of St Mary in the Heathcote Valley.

Recently Mobil undertook maintenance on their fuel pipeline which extends underground from Lyttelton Port to their Chapmans Road tank farm in Woolston, right through the Heathcote Valley. The maintenance involved digging up the road and footpath in Truscotts Road. This excavation work impacted quite negatively on the rather sad fence of our Christmas Tree paddock (so-called because it is the source of many a Heathcote Christmas tree).

In fact although the contractors made a good job of tidying up the roadside the fence was left with a very bad lean and it looked as if it wouldn’t survive the winter! The hedge around the Church of St Mary had also suffered a very severe ‘prune’ and was showing some large bare spots. A letter from the Vestry to the manager of the Chapman’s Road tank farm site resulted in a prompt meeting between the Church Wardens and Mobil management.

The outcome was that Mobil said they would make good the fencing and give the hedge a ‘decent’ trim. The work was done yesterday by contractors for Mobil. While the Christmas Tree fence isn’t ‘brand new’, it is certainly a huge improvement on the existing fence with new posts and the wires tightened. The hedge is looking much neater and tidier too. Many thanks to Mobil who have certainly acted as good neighbours to the Church of St Mary.
