Calendars – A Heathcote Valley Community Association fundraising project.
For the second year The Heathcote Valley Community Association has a calendar for sale. We produce it as a way of raising funds for community enhancement projects and to assist other community groups in the valley with their efforts.
During recent years the association has, with financial assistance from the Hagley Ferrymead Community Board, done extensive planting along the railway embankments in the vicinity of the overbridge in Martindales Road.
In a few years, when these plants mature, this area will become a landscaped area of native species adding to the appeal of the lovely historic, stone-capped, brick bridge built some 140 years ago. The funds from this year’s calendar will help extend the plantings and maintain the existing work.
This year’s calendar shows a selection of gardens from the Avoca, Horotane and Heathcote valleys. The gardens were selected to display the variety of styles and plantings found in this very special place. They include dry, steep, rocky west facing slopes covered in tussocks, natives, and art works; a north facing, hot, dry, succulent filled garden; a woodland section of a large garden; a cottage garden; and even a council landscaped drain, as well others.
[Copies are available at the Blackbird giftshop in the centre of old Heathcote on the corner of Flavell Street and Station Road, from any members of the HVCA committee, or by phoning Drina on 384 3321.]
