It is a chance for young ones to take their Nana around the park or maybe an opportunity for Grandpa to teach your young Johnny what life used to be like!

Dave Newman, who became a relatively young grandfather in his 40s, has been working on and off with the Canterbury Railway Society for 20 years. Over that time, Dave has managed to bring along to Ferrymead Heritage Park almost every member of his family.

Dave’s grand-daughter is Ella-Rose and she enjoys a trip to the Park whenever she can. She talks about the horses that are often to be seen, the yummy food at the bakery, but especially she says, “I love the train, especially when Poppa is on it!

Ella-Rose’s great-grandma Val often brings her along to the Park for a little laid back entertainment.  In truth, it’s really Ella-Rose who brings her great-grandma! Both grandad Dave and great-grandma Val agree that Grandparents’ Day is a wonderful opportunity to spend some special time with the extended family as well as allowing children to “experience how life used to be”.

Brilliant heritage storyteller Margaret Copland will bring New Zealand history to life.  Copland has a special talent for creating the characters of everyday people whose tales enchant all ages.  You can see Margaret in the Friendly Societies Building at set times between 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Visitors to Grandparents’ Day can also take part in The Ferry Ale House Heritage Trail.  Among the eleven activities, you will find items that grandma would have used in the kitchen, play the games that Grandpa did at school, experience what it was like for a farmer to sow seeds 50 years ago, and create a special message just for your grandparents.

Just in case you are feeling hungry after completing the trail, you will receive a special meal offer from The Ferry Ale House to enjoy after your visit.

All the usual Ferrymead Heritage Park attractions will be open too such as the Curragh Cottage, the Ferrymead Printers, the Post Office, Hall of Wheels, aeronautical hangars, Garden City Model Trains and many more magical museums.

Grandparents’ Day, in association with The Ferry Ale House, at Ferrymead Heritage Park, Sunday 1 February, 2009, 10 am to 4.30 pm. Steam train and tram running all day; rides included in entry cost.
