Tess and Amelia getting their lids shaved. Credit: Tess Lenihan [Heathcote Valley people Tess and Amelia had a close shave for the Child Cancer Society. Don't forget you can still donate through her hotline. Why did they do it? Tess tells us why here.]

I got there at about 4.30 pm, all alone. After signing in with about 50 other people, our group grew to around 130 'shavees'. Then I went through and got my 'before' photo. Standing there holding my number, it felt like I was getting a mug shot!

Just after 5 pm I get a tap on my shoulder, turning around I see my little, nine year old sister Amelia. I'm not sure what is going on at this point until I see she is holding the same bit of paper as me. Mum suddenly appears and confirms what I am thinking, she's decided to get her lid shaved too!

When mum, my son Cameron and my sister Amelia turned up to support me, Amelia decided, right this is what I want to do too! If you suddenly decided on the day you wanted to shave your lid you had to donate a minimum of $20. Well, this is what mum had done for Amelia. She had expressed interest when I first said months ago that I was planning to shave my lid. She was my support crew in a sense.

We were told to go on stage and sit down when there was a seat free. Amelia and I hung back till we could sit together, although I think that she just wanted it over with. I got a Crusader rugby player to cut my hair, but I didn't even notice! It was only when mum showed me the photos that I realised. For Amelia, it was the President of the Hair Dressers' Association, who had just had his head done too.

The finished result, cold but great. Credit: Tess LenihanI didn't really notice the crowd at all as I was focusing on my son watching me and mum taking photos. As my hair was cut off I actually felt sort of sad and happy at the same time. I think my emotions were a bit all over the place as Amelia had really shaken me up with wanting to do it as well. And yes, I was COLD!

As for Amelia, I'm not sure what she was thinking. She looked terrified and excited at the same, is that possible? But all she could do was smile for the rest of the night. I am so proud of her. I actually liked having pink hair and would be keen to try another mad colour. But, yes, I am pleased to be rid of my pink lid, it was too hot! When it was done we both felt great. Cold heads, but great.

We went to the Eastgate shopping mall afterwards and it was funny see the different looks on the people's faces. We also bumped into the Heathcote Valley School office lady, Paula. She knew that I was getting mine done but had no idea about Amelia, so her face was priceless!

My daughter Ashleigh was at school camp so she didn't get to see our heads shaved until the evening. Going to school this morning with Amelia was a whole different ball game as no one knew what Amelia had done. She was very chuffed with the many comments of support she received from both teachers, principal and students.

I have raised around $230 so far and could get about another $30. Thank you everyone!
