Callum McKie, aged 7, takes Seaspray for its first voyage on Lake Heathcote. Photo: Ian McLeodHow does a new lake get a name? In Heathcote, it is a little-known tradition that if you are seven years old and taking your yacht out for its first voyage on a lake with no name, you should get the chance to give it one. This is what happened recently at the pond in the wetlands area opposite Ferrymead Heritage Park. The result being that Heathcote now has a pond with the new name of Lake Heathcote!

Callum McKie, aged seven, wanted to take his yacht on its first voyage. The new and quite large pond provided a perfect opportunity: sheltered, safe and close to home. The name of the yacht, "Seaspray", suggests its owner intends to go a long way in his new sport. It is in fact a class of yacht that has been the starting point for many Olympic sailors. The Optimist was designed back in 1947 for youngsters to get started and is now the most popular youth racing class in the world. Let's hope that Callum gives us the chance to cheer him on like dad Jim, photographer Ian McLeod, sister Ruth, brother James and his friends did on his first voyage. Good luck Callum...
