For nearly two years the Heathcote Valley Community Association has been trying to get the traffic islands on the corner of Port Hills Road and Scruttons Road repaired. They have become untidy and unsafe with the terminals crumbling and scattering over the road. This has happened because they were too long to be navigated by some of the bigger trucks that leave the Tunnel Road via the Scrutton's Road off-ramp.
I was told by Transit NZ that they were aware of the situation but they didn't have the funds for any repairs. That safety issues came before aesthetic ones. How is this not a safety issue? On 14 August 2007 I sent a photograph showing the apalling state of the traffic islands to both transit NZ and the City Council but received no reply from either.
Suddenly two of the islands have been reduced in length and had their terminals repaired and painted. Why not all of them? Oh no! It's a 'demarcation dispute'. Transit have repaired the two that they are resposible for, it is up to the City Council to see to the ones that are theirs. When will these guys start talking to each other and not waste ratepayers money by doing everything piecemeal!!!
