[Update: We have received information that the driver of the truck has now been identified.]
At some time between 11:00 am and 11:30 am today a truck apparently
attempted to pass under the rail bridge over Martindales Road despite
being over height.
In it's efforts to get through and then out,
significant damage was done to this well known Heathcote Valley
landmark. Authorities would appreciate any information from anybody who saw the incident and those involved.
It appears that the truck managed to get under the
bridge and as far through as the yellow steel bracing structure on the
east side. It then became jammed there, taking the structure away from
the abutment until the chains, attaching the structure to the rest of
the bridge, stopped any further progress.
The driver then
reversed out doing significant damage to the bracing on the west side
too! The police and Ontrack engineers at the scene wonder whether he
may have partially deflated his tyres to back out? At this moment trains can only continue to use the bridge at limited speed.
A truck
was seen by a motorist at the roundabout, reversing out of Martindales
Rd at 11:30. She was unaware of the reason however, so does not recall
the firm involved. The police and Ontrack will be very keen to hear
from anyone who may have seen the truck.
There was someone
assisting the driver, as a guide, while he was negotiating his way back
out of Martindales Road. If that person were to contact the police or
Ontrack with information it would be of material help to their
investigation.
