Looking down Martindales Road. Credit: Ian McLeod When I first moved to the Heathcote Valley, I resolved, now that I had the world at my feet, that I would walk on the hills every day. I did for a while too. I had my sister, a keen walker, staying with me, and each morning we would set off to explore another part of the valley.

Unfortunately, when she returned to Wellington, my resolve melted as other activities pushed themselves in to the time I had set aside for walking. Determined to do more walking, I have decided that the best way to keep myself motivated is to make a public commitment!

I am sure I'm not the only person in the valley who would enjoy a brisk walk around the streets and lower hills – not too brisk because I like to stop and smell the flowers too. Every Tuesday morning a small group of us leave from outside the Upshot Coffee Shop and have a very pleasant one hour's walk.

I have the name of someone who is unable to come on Tuesdays but would love to have a companion to walk with on a Monday morning. Likewise, I am very happy to connect people of similar walking strengths who might find the Tuesday group too slow or too fast for them.
