While the rest of Christchurch was experiencing some very average autumn weather, the sun was shining in Heathcote Valley one Sunday in April when nearly 50 people put on their walking shoes and took to the streets on a sponsored walk benefiting the St Mary’s Village Hall redevelopment project.
The walk took the participants on a ‘round the Valley walk’ of approximately 5 kilometres. The participants were community members and parishioners alike and there were a number of children who took part, some on trikes and the very young in pushchairs. Local Port Hills MP, Ruth Dyson, came along and joined us.
The walk was animal friendly so some people made the most of an
opportunity to ‘walk the dog’. While we didn’t have any runners join
us, there was certainly a good response for another event in the Spring
with some fitness enthusiasts requesting that we make it a longer walk.
At the conclusion of the walk a number of the participants retired to
the Valley Inn where Dean had prepared some very welcome BBQ sausages.
After all that activity they tasted great washed down with a good drop
of lager! The funds raised at this event totaled $1500 for Stage 2 of
the Village Hall redevelopment. Everyone who went asked if we could hold another walk (with a bigger
walk as well) in the spring, so we will be – watch this space (and get
in training!).
The Project Team are awaiting revised costings from the building
contractors for Stage 2 and hopefully fundraising for this will be
completed by the end of this year.
