Wheelie bins - Problems for Heathcote hillbillies?

[Editor: For better or worse, the Council will be moving to a wheelie bin based rubbish collection service in early 2009. The change is creating some discussion on what it means for hill suburbs like ours. This letter was submitted by Drina Sisarich to highlight the issues. After a visit to the Council's information pages on rubbish collection and a quick phone call we got some answers and they have been threaded into Drina's letter below.]

I heartily applaud the Christchurch City Council's efforts to dispose of our refuse in a more eco-friendly way. Few will be sorry to see the last of the black plastic bags now clogging our landfills.

However, I hope there is room for this service to be modified to suit different conditions. Many people in our community don't have footpaths. Their property goes directly off the road onto a steep path or sometimes steps. How are the elderly and frail to manoeuvre three large bins in situations such as these? Also, different households' capacity requirements will vary considerably.

[The Council accept this can be awkward and mention the provision of alternative collection methods, such as plastic bags. This possibility is only available when the use of wheelie bins is not feasible.]

To expect that a pensioner's cottage give up a large portion of its precious garden to pay for and house three large wheelie bins that will never be fully used is a big ask.

[The largest 240 litre bin can be replaced with a smaller size of 140 litres.]

And, as a previous correspondent pointed out, how do we keep them clean?

[No answer here as yet, but we suggest a hosepipe and This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it that each bin needs a drain to make cleaning easier.]

Good idea, guys. Just please don't forget us hillbillies.
